ON OUR RADAR:
Andrew McLuhan: Written Matters and Noelle Hamlyn: Remembered and Retold at United Contemporary. Presented in partnership with 2gallery (Picton, ON), this duo exhibition examines modes of communication, and what prompts communication about ourselves, to others. (Feb 10 - Mar 5).
Shaheer Zazai, A Call Home at Patel Brown Gallery (21 Wade Ave). With a practice that expands across painting and digital media, the works presented in this exhibition include a set of carpets assiduously rendered by Zazai in Microsoft Word and woven in collaboration with carpet weavers in Kabul. Joining them are a group of solemn black and white prints that are simultaneously mesmerizing and eerisome. (Feb 12 - Mar 19).
Joshua Vettivelu: prayers for a word (or a lack that builds the world) at The Visual Arts Centre of Clarington (VAC) presents hundreds of slowly melting castings of their grandmother’s hands, made out of beeswax infused with ‘Ceylon’ cinnamon.
Vettivelu’s research investigates how the language we use to understand ourselves is informed by the material conditions that surround us. Prayers for a word (a lack that builds the world) connects the material history of the spice trade with the psychic impact of European missionary work to explore how frameworks of redemption and salvation have been used to ensure enthusiastic labour and unfettered access to resources. (Feb 4 - Mar 6). Artist-led tour and talk: March 5 at 12pm.
