Media Preview: David Blackwood at the Art Gallery of Ontario
_
Images of giant whales seen from beneath the sea next to haunting Arctic landscapes are a constant in David Blackwood’s world.
Blackwood is one of Canada’s best-known printmakers and is now having a retrospective show at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
The show brings together more than 80 drawings, paintings, and archival materials from his studio, as well as many of the original copper plates that were used to create some of Blackwood’s most iconic prints.
As someone who was not familiar with his work, it was very interesting to see the different iterations of the prints and how each layer adds depth tp the final composition.
There is also an interactive component that reimagines the scentscape of Newfoundland’s coast, where Blackwood was born and raised.
