CREATING TITLES FOR S2 OF NETFLIX'S BEEF

I recently watched the second season of Beef, and loved the titles at the beginning of each episode!
The juxtaposition of Flemish paintings and contemporary type was so good!

If you're into typography, design, film, and art, this article on It's Nice That is such a good read!

*Titles by Benjamin Tuttle. Creative direction by Lee Sung Jin.

P.S. Look up Beef on Google and see this animation come up on your screen. lol.

HOW CURLING STONES ARE MADE

I had never heard of curling until I moved to Canada over a decade ago but I actually don't mind watching it from time to time and I would even like to play it at some point.

Little did I know it originated in Scotland in the early 1500's! And, the rocks that are used in the sport, all come from the same Scottish island, which are harvested under ecological supervision.

Fascinating!

P.S. Round of applause to the Reuters team who created this piece! The animations and illustrations make this truly a delight to read!

A SITE THAT LET'S YOU DISCOVER INDEPENDENT BLOGS

I love finding blogs made by people for people, though it's hard to find these as they often get lost in all the content noise that exists thanks to social media, AI, and corporate blogs that try to sell you something.

I just came across this site that shows you a new blog by just clicking on a button.

So cool!

YOU NEED TO BE BORED MORE OFTEN

September 07, 2025

Loved this video! Yes!

I very much enjoy going out for a run for this same reason: when you're "bored", you have time to think about things you don't make time for, and you get to think about questions and answers you wouldn't have had time to think about if you would have been "entertained" scrolling through your feed.

I'm trying to get better at it.

NOW PLAYING: ALABASTER DEPLUME - IF YOU'RE SURE YOU WANT TO

February 21, 2025

Honestly, I knew nothing about them before writing this post. Their music came up and I had to look them up! It makes me feel like a character in a whimsy silent film. If that makes any sense. 😆

P.S. Music links by odesli, a site I discovered via Chris Glass.

WHY DO WE NEED TRINKETS | A GRAPHIC DESIGN DISCUSSION

February 20, 2025

What are trinkets and why we love them. Is it nostalgia? An act of escapism from the day to day life? A way to express our personalities and interests?

August 22, 2024 New York, NY, USA

How cool are these studies! I came across the feed of NYC based photographer/director/artist Susanne Saroff and I couldn't stop scrolling! They're a bit quirky, colourful, and just fun!

Original post here.

A few of my favourites: figs | cherrys | lipstick smudges

MEREDITH WOOLNOUGH: STITCHED LETTER TO MY FUTURE SELF

August 20, 2024

This stitched letter by artist Meredith Woolnough made me smile and gasp at the same time!
"A stitched letter to ‘my future self’. A fun freehand machine embroidery activity to do on water soluble fabric. I especially love how the text becomes unreadable when the base fabric is washed away."

A SCULPTURE GARDEN IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE

August 19, 2024 Aix-en-Provence, France

I'm a sucker for all things art, especially outside of a gallery space, and I've just found out there's this place called Château La Coste in the south of France which has a sculpture garden, gallery, and art + architecture walks.

- via the fox is black.

Some of the artists involved are: James Turrell, Nancy Holt, Jenny Holzer, EJ Hill, Arthur Jafa, Nikita Gale, Gala Porras-Kim, Raven Halfmoon, and additional artists are expected to be announced in the coming months.

NICE AUNTIES: LIVING A DREAM LIFE THANKS TO A.I.

July 20, 2023 Singapore

Prompt: Open call by @jupiterfong to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month

From wearing fabulous outfits to beach parties to having high-fashion photo shoots next to oversized produce, this group of senior women is living an unconventional life. But they only exist thanks to AI.

Scrolling through the @niceaunties Instagram feed is as puzzling as familiar. The account serves as a sort of photo album in which we follow their intergalactic adventures as well as some mundane moments like cooking with mysterious foods that only exist in their alternate universe or morning meditations in sequined outfits. (Are there mornings in the Hyperspace?)

ART IN SPACE: THIS ART WORK ORBITS AROUND THE EARTH SINCE 2015!

June 27, 2023

Images: ESA / NASA via space-invaders

Can you imagine this?!

The first work of art to be shown in space is the mosaic of a space invader, created by French urban artist Invader, and it's been orbiting around the Earth since 2015.

It only seems fitting!

CURATING AN ART COLLECTION FOR PARTIAL

December 01, 2022

Nicole Krstin, Meditation Meds

A few weeks ago, I was invited by Partial to curate a guest collection for their site!

I'm not gonna lie: after the initial excitement, this felt a bit daunting, too! Mostly because I wanted to create a collection that would tell a story and was more than just a group of works I liked. And so, after browsing through their impressive catalogue, I bookmarked some pieces and only then I started to notice a pattern: all of the works I had selected made me feel a particular sense of nostalgia.

You know that feeling you have when you can't remember where you've seen something before? Was it only a dream? Did you actually see it somewhere?

Based on that feeling, the name of my collection is: Dreams are Memories and it features works by fifteen emerging Canadian artists: Pandora Owl / Evelyn Trista / Nicole Kristin / Tal Paz-Fridman / Caroline Ji / Sonya Katashonova / Devon Pryce / Helen Tran / Laura Key Keeling / Catherine Mills / Erin McGean / Lilian Sim / Diane Fine / Corynn Kokolakis / Esther Kim.

About the collection:

"I find it very interesting to think of why we dream what we dream. Why our minds decide to capture a specific moment in time: An object, a person, a place. Why sometimes the scenes are clear and why sometimes it's all out of whack? For this collection I chose works that evoked a feeling of nostalgia. Not about a memory of something lived, but for the memory of something I could have seen in my dreams." -Carla Rojas

"Dreams are Memories" is now live on Partial.

Thanks to Partial for letting me be part of this project!

WHERE TO BUY ART IN TORONTO

August 21, 2022 Toronto, ON, Canada

Art by Marissa Schiesser via artterra.ca

More often than you can imagine, I've been asked this question:

Where can I buy art in Toronto? -and across Canada

While the answer has changed a bit over the past couple of years (say before and after 2020), I figured I could put together a list of some of the places I often recommend in case you are looking for original art by local artists but you're not sure of where to start looking.

*While many of these sites are based in Toronto, some offer shipping across Canada.

How popular is your birthday?

October 04, 2018

Matt Stiles created an interactive chart with the average amount of births based on the data of two decades of American Birthdays.

The darker the colour, the more babies were born on that day... which also shows a trend on when people tend to conceive! tee-hee!

You can see it in full glory, here.

HOW WOULD SEX IN SPACE BE LIKE?

March 30, 2017

According to this video, and to NASA, although there are records of a married couple who went to a space mission together, there's never been a case of a couple having sex in space. Although, apparently some insects and animals have.

Fascinating!

Also, I cannot remember how many times I've watched this video!
